Junior Environmentalist Program
ACTIVITY BOOK AND BADGE PROGRAM
Introducing our Junior Environmentalist program. Are you a Squirrel (ages 4–6), a Raccoon (ages 7–9), or a Hawk (ages 10+)?
HOW DO I GET ONE OF THESE (free) ACTIVITY BOOKS?
Come by during our OPEN HOURS (Saturday mornings, 9– 1) to ask a Volunteer to grab you a (self-guided) FREE activity booklet and start exploring and learning right away.
DOES MY CHILD HAVE TO COMPLETE EVERY ACTIVITY TO GET A BADGE?
No. Just encourage them to do as many activities as they'd like to learn more about gardening, food justice, mutual aid, composting, etc. We tried to categorize the activities by age group (see inside cover page note to caregivers and parents).
HOW DO I GET MY (CHILD'S) BADGE?
We will be having a badge ceremony / pizza party toward the end of the growing season. At the ceremony/party, we will hand out badges and sign their booklet's certificate. So keep your book handy.
DO I HAVE TO GO TO THE GARDEN TO DO ALL THE ACTIVITIES IN THE BOOK?
No. There are some activities (like the scavenger hunt) that you need to be in the garden to do, but most can be done remotely. We hope the booklet will encourage children to come during Open Hours to experience firsthand all they're learning about (harvesting herbs, processing food scraps, etc.). Kids accompanied by adults are always welcome to shadow volunteers on everyday tasks (no dropoffs though).
HOW CAN I LEARN MORE ABOUT THE EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES THAT GO ON AT THE GARDEN?
If you follow our Instagram and Facebook accounts, we mainly post current events there. You can also join our mailing list but we don't send out frequent newsletters. Social media is the best way to stay up to date.
